Creating your own perfume brand: where to start
A perfume brand is not just a fragrance. It is a story, an object, a price and a route to the customer — and each of these has to work before the first bottle is sold.
Concept and positioning
Who is it for, at what price, and why this brand rather than another? The answer shapes everything that follows, from the bottle to the channels.
The fragrances
Most brands work with a perfumer or a fragrance house to create or select their scents. Start with a short range you can explain and defend rather than a long one.
Bottle and packaging
The bottle, the cap, the box and the labels carry the brand as much as the scent. Lead times and minimum quantities for components weigh on budget and timing.
Regulation
In the EU, a perfume is a cosmetic product: it needs a Responsible Person, a product information file, a safety assessment and a CPNP notification before it is sold, and its formula must respect the applicable restrictions. Plan this with qualified specialists from the start.
Pricing, margins and a first channel
Set the public price from your positioning, then check that it leaves room for each channel. Starting with a channel you control — online, events, sampling — lets you test the brand before opening wider distribution.
