From product to shelf in France: the distribution map
For a foreign brand, the French market can look like a maze of intermediaries. In reality there are a few clear routes, and choosing the right one early saves months.
The importer
The importer buys your products, clears customs, takes legal responsibility for compliance in France and resells to retailers or distributors. It is often the first partner a non-EU brand needs. In exchange, the importer takes a margin and usually asks for exclusivity on a territory or channel.
The distributor
A distributor holds stock, has a sales team and an existing portfolio of retail or foodservice clients. Some importers are also distributors. A good distributor brings relationships you cannot build alone; a weak one will list you and let your product sleep in the warehouse. Ask for references, sales capacity and a joint business plan.
The commercial agent
An agent sells on your behalf against a commission, without buying the goods. It is a light way to open doors with buyers, but you still need a logistics and import solution behind it.
Wholesalers and cash & carry
Wholesalers and cash & carry networks (such as Metro or Promocash) serve restaurants, cafés, hotels and independent shops. This is a strong route for brands targeting foodservice ("CHR" in French) or traditional retail.
Direct listing with a retail group
Going directly to a national retail group is possible, but it requires French-compliant packaging, a logistics set-up, the capacity to follow negotiations and to fund in-store marketing. Most brands get there after a first phase through specialists.
Specialist and digital routes
Premium department stores, fine grocers, concept stores, organic chains, pharmacies (for cosmetics and wellness), e-commerce and marketplaces are often the best entry points for a new brand: smaller volumes, higher visibility, faster feedback.
How to choose
Start from your target consumer and where they shop, then work backwards: which channel reaches them, who serves that channel, and what margin structure keeps your price competitive on shelf.
