What a UAE brand should understand before its first French retail meeting

France is one of Europe's most attractive consumer markets, but its retail system works very differently from the Gulf. Brands that arrive with a great product and a good deck often leave their first buyer meeting without a listing, not because the product was wrong, but because the meeting was.

How French retail buys

Most food and FMCG volume in France goes through a handful of retail groups, including E.Leclerc, Carrefour, Les Mousquetaires (Intermarché), Système U, Auchan and Lidl. Many of them negotiate through central buying organisations ("centrales d'achat"). This means your first meeting is often with a category buyer who manages hundreds of references and evaluates yours against margin, rotation and space.

The calendar matters

For many FMCG suppliers, annual commercial negotiations with French retailers run over the winter and must be concluded by 1 March, under the EGalim framework. Arriving in April with a new product often means waiting for the next cycle or entering through a regional or specialist route first.

Compliance comes before the pitch

Products sold in France must carry their mandatory information in French. For food, EU labelling rules (Regulation 1169/2011) define what must appear: ingredients, allergens, nutrition table, best-before date, operator address in the EU. A buyer will not list a product that is not compliant, and the importer of record takes legal responsibility for it.

Margins and promotions

French retail economics are tight. Prepare a clear price structure from ex-works to shelf price, including importer or distributor margin, logistics, retailer margin and VAT. Promotions on food products are also capped by law, so a launch plan built only on discounts will not work.

What to bring to the table

  • 01A one-page brand story adapted to French consumers, not a translation of your UAE deck
  • 02Compliant packaging (or a credible plan and timeline for it)
  • 03A price structure and the margin you leave to the retailer
  • 04Your logistics answer: who imports, who stores, who delivers
  • 05A marketing plan for the first six months: sampling, social media, in-store activation

Start where you can win

A national listing is rarely the first step. Many brands start with premium department stores, specialist grocers, a regional chain or e-commerce, build proof of sales, then go back to national buyers with data.

At Scena Growth, we prepare UAE brands for this moment: market reading, packaging adaptation, price structure, importer search and buyer meetings.
